Our Philosophy

At Seashore Soccer League, our small-sided 3v3 and 4v4 formats are designed to create a fun, engaging environment that supports learning and development. At these younger ages, enjoyment is key—when players have fun, they are more motivated to continue playing, practicing, and growing their love for the game.

This format encourages players to stay actively involved and build confidence through frequent interaction with the ball. By keeping teams small, players have more opportunities to touch the ball, make decisions, and participate in all aspects of the game.

Why 3v3 / 4v4?

Reducing the number of players on the field creates a developmentally appropriate environment that allows young athletes to better understand the game. This approach ensures more touches on the ball, increased opportunities to score, greater overall participation, and an introduction to teamwork, spacing, and decision-making. The game itself becomes the primary teacher, allowing players to learn naturally through play.

Why No Goalkeepers?

Goalkeepers are not used at this stage to support overall player development. At younger ages, it is important for all players to experience the game as field players, building well-rounded skills, confidence, and game awareness. Goalkeeping requires a level of coordination, decision-making, and maturity that typically develops later, so this format prioritizes foundational skill development for all players.

Rosters & Playing Time

Roster sizes are designed to keep players active and maximize development opportunities. Under the single field format, the recommended roster size is a minimum of 4 players and a maximum of 6 players. In a dual field format, the recommended roster size increases to a minimum of 8 players and a maximum of 10 players.

Playing time is a key part of the player experience. All players are guaranteed a minimum of 50% playing time, with the goal at the U6 level for facilitators to achieve as close to 100% playing time as possible. This ensures every player remains engaged, continues to develop, and enjoys their time on the field.
