Beginning with the 2026–2027 league year, Seashore Soccer League will follow a seasonal (school-year) age group structure. Age groups are determined based on the league year, which runs from August 1 through July 31.

Players will be placed into age groups according to their birth year within this timeframe and will remain in the same age group for both the fall and spring seasons. This approach provides consistency and allows for more cohesive player development throughout the year.

For specific birthdate ranges, please refer to the Age Group tab.

This age group structure aligns with North Carolina Youth Soccer Association (NCYSA) guidelines.

Micros Program

The Micros Program at Seashore Soccer League is designed to introduce our youngest players to the game of soccer in a fun and supportive environment. As children take their first steps in the sport, we focus on helping them become comfortable with the ball and excited to play.

This program is built around a “parent and me” approach, encouraging parents and guardians to actively participate alongside their child. This shared experience creates a positive, encouraging atmosphere that helps build confidence and enjoyment.

Our philosophy emphasizes a dribble-first mindset, teaching players to control the ball at their feet rather than simply kicking it away. By developing these foundational skills early, players begin to build the confidence and coordination needed for long-term success in the game.

Juniors Program

The Juniors Program at Seashore Soccer League introduces young players to the game in a fun, engaging, and development-focused environment. Our age-appropriate curriculum is designed to help players build new skills each session, including dribbling, passing, shooting, teamwork, and more.

Each week, players are introduced to a new skill and given the opportunity to practice it through interactive activities, small-sided games, and scrimmages. Our experienced coaches—who bring strong backgrounds in playing and/or coaching—are passionate about teaching the game and inspiring a love for soccer in every player.

Designed for ages 3–5, the program runs once per week over a four-week period. All sessions are conducted using a pool training format, meaning there are no assigned teams. Instead, players train together as a group, allowing coaches to focus on individual development rather than team results.

This approach creates an ideal learning environment for beginners—reducing pressure, encouraging confidence, and helping players focus on learning and enjoying the game. Pool training also allows our coaches to provide consistent, intentional instruction and ensure each player receives the attention they need to grow.

Rec U6

The U6 division at Seashore Soccer League is designed to provide a fun, fast-paced introduction to game play while continuing to emphasize individual development and enjoyment of the sport. Games are played in a 4v4 format, with all players participating as field players and no goalkeepers, ensuring constant involvement on both offense and defense. Matches are divided into four quarters lasting 5 minutes each, with short breaks of 1–2 minutes between quarters and a 5-minute halftime. To encourage skill development and maintain game flow, there are no throw-ins; play is restarted with a kick-in when the ball goes out of bounds, and opposing players must stand at least 3 yards back. Corner kicks are not introduced at this level, while goal kicks are not used, simplifying the game and maximizing touches on the ball.

U8 Rec & Academy

The U8 division at Seashore Soccer League continues to develop players in a structured yet fun environment, building on foundational skills while introducing more game awareness and teamwork. Games are played in a 4v4 or 5v5 format (depending on league setup), allowing players to stay actively involved while gaining increased exposure to spacing, passing, and movement. Matches are organized into quarters with appropriate breaks to support player development and instruction.

At this level, players are introduced to game rules such as throw-ins, corner kicks, and goal kicks, helping them better understand the flow of play while continuing to build confidence on the ball. Emphasis remains on skill development, decision-making, and enjoyment of the game.

The SSL Academy Development Program is integrated into the U8 experience as an 8-month, skill-driven system designed to improve each player’s ability and passion for soccer. Through professionally trained coaching staff, players receive high-quality, age-appropriate instruction focused on preparing them for progression into Classic-level play and beyond. This combination of structured play and intentional development creates an environment where players can grow, compete, and develop a lasting love for the game.

U10 Rec & Academy

The U10 division at Seashore Soccer League continues to build on player development by emphasizing both individual skill and team concepts in a more structured game environment. Games are played in a 7v7 format, including a goalkeeper, allowing players to further develop positional awareness and teamwork. Matches consist of two 25-minute halves and a 5-minute halftime. At this level, players are expected to apply fundamental skills such as dribbling, passing, and shooting within the flow of the game, while also growing in their understanding of spacing, movement, and decision-making. Standard rules of play are enforced, helping players gain confidence and familiarity with the full structure of the game. This format provides a balanced environment that encourages continued growth, teamwork, and a deeper understanding of soccer.

U12 Travel Rec & Classic

The Seashore Soccer League (SSL) will sponsor U12–U19 teams by providing players the opportunity to participate in the East Carolina Soccer Association (ECSA). While SSL supports team formation, ECSA is responsible for managing league operations, including scheduling, rules, and policies. As a result, participating teams should expect travel and a higher level of competition compared to in-house recreational programs at the younger age groups. SSL is not responsible for game scheduling, forfeits due to no-shows, or player availability. All coaches, players, and families are encouraged to review ECSA’s official rules and policies on their website.

Each season typically includes approximately eight games, with a combination of home and away matches. Most home games are played at Rotary Park, with games scheduled on Saturdays, Sundays, or both. At the conclusion of the season, all teams participate in a single-elimination tournament hosted by ECSA member clubs, with locations varying by age group and division.

The SSL Classic Program is designed for players who aspire to achieve excellence in their game. This player-centered program places development as the top priority, focusing on the technical, tactical, physical, and psychological growth of each athlete as they work toward reaching their full potential. Our long-standing tradition of success is built on individual player improvement over time, not just results on the field.

All players are expected to represent SSL in accordance with the Player Code of Conduct and are treated with equal respect and opportunity. Our coaching staff is committed to being a positive influence in each player’s life, fostering an environment built on respect, honesty, and encouragement. Players are challenged to think for themselves, take ownership of their development, and build strong habits that lead to long-term success both on and off the field.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about our competitive program? We’ve got answers! Here’s everything you need to know to get started.

  • What is changing in the Fall of 2026?

Starting in the fall of 2026, youth soccer will use a seasonal (School-Year) age group system. This is the direction that the US Soccer Federation has recommended, and US Youth Soccer and the North Carolina Youth Soccer Association have adopted. As a member of these organizations, Seashore Soccer League will follow them.

SSL will group players using an Aug 1 - July 31 cutoff date.

    This means:

    • Players are placed based on their birthdate within that seasonal year.
    • Most players will now be grouped more closely with their K-12 school classmates. .
  • Why is this change happening?

For years, soccer used a January 1 birth-year system.  Many leaders felt that the system did not reflect how children grow socially. Players usually identify with their classmates in their school grade. This new system better aligns soccer with how children experience school and friendships.

  • Will my athlete play with their classmates?

In most cases, yes. However, school districts do not all use the same cutoff dates.

    Because of that:

    • Players born January-July will advance one age group for the 26/27 seasonal soccer year.
    • Players born August-December will remain in their current age group
  • What if my athlete has a summer birthday?

    Summer birthdays can feel tricky.

Under the August 1 cutoff-Players born in August will be the oldest on their soccer team

Players born in July will be the youngest on their soccer team.

Some families choose to delay the start of school. Soccer does not allow players to “play down” based on school decisions.

Soccer age groups are based strictly on birthdate rules set by governing bodies.

  • Can my athlete play in an older age group?

Possibly, and this is not a choice for parents or athletes.

For our recreation program, parents, coaches, Area Coordinators, and the Director of Recreation can discuss the player's development and the best option for them.

For our competitive programs, playing up is a technical development decision made in collaboration with coaches and SSL Directors.

To be considered to play up for the competitive program:

    • A player must try out in their assigned age group
    • The player must rank in the top half of the older group
    • The player must show advanced skill and maturity
    • SSL’s evaluation panel must approve the move
    • Parents will be consulted if an invitation is offered.
    • Parents may decline the invitation.

Most players (about 90-95%) will remain in their assigned age group.

  • Can my athlete choose to play down a year?

No, Governing body rules do not allow players to play down based on school grade decisions. Soccer age groups are determined strictly by birthdate.

  • What if my child is young for their age group?

Being young in an age group is not automatically a disadvantage.

    Many young players:

    • Develop strong resilience
    • Grow confidence over time
    • Thrive with proper coaching
    • Our goal is to place each player in the right environment for long-term development, not just short-term comfort.

  • How does SSL decide who plays up for competitive programs?

    We use different factors, including:

    Multiple evaluators;

    • Skill-by-skill scoring
    • Panel review by Directors
    • Coach input
    • Maturity and readiness factors
    • No single coach makes this decision alone

The final decision rests with SSL leadership.

  • Will teams change because of this?

Some teams may shift slightly due to the age group realignment.

    However;

    • Not all teams will change
    • Many players will remain with familiar teammates
    • SSL will form teams based on development, competitiveness, and roster balance.

We do not guarantee a team in every age group each year for our competitive programs. For our recreation program, we use even-numbered age groups that combine two age groups together. For example, the U12 age group has players from the U12 and U11 age groups.

  • What if another club is doing things differently?

Different clubs may communicate policies differently. However, all clubs must follow the governing body's age rules.

    SSL remains focused on:

    • Player development
    • Competitive integrity
    • Long-term club strength
  • What matters most in this transition?

    Three things guide every decision

    1. What is best for the players' development?
    2.  What supports team balance and fairness?
    3. What strengthens the club long-term?

These decisions are not made lightly. They are made carefully and consistently.

  • I feel confused. What should I do?

That’s completely normal. This change affects many families in different ways.
